Characterisation of doctoral students

Results:

1. Clarifying the role of doctoral students in research networks from a theoretical point of view and based on the evidence of prior analyses
2. Identifying the sample of life sciences research units for the project and constructing a questionnaire for completion by research units/universities on their doctoral students
3. Collection of data on variables related to doctoral students, including information on origin and previous higher education institutions
4. Provision of a descriptive analysis of the collected data with a focus on variation in universities' capacity to attract doctoral students from outside their geographic area, plus methodological lessons learned in respect of a possible extension of this assessment to other disciplines or regions
